There’s an old joke about an eternally optimistic kid digging frantically through a box of manure because he’s convinced there’s a pony in there somewhere.

Bringing us to the Boston Bruins, who return to New England Sunday night for Game 3 of their NHL Eastern Conference preliminary-round playoff series with the Montreal Canadiens (CBC, CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET) down 2-0 in the best-of-seven.

The Ottawa Senators allowed 72 power-play goals during the regular season, more than any playoff team in the Eastern Conference. Knowing that, the Pittsburgh Penguins took full advantage on Friday night.

Ryan Malone scored twice in the final 62 seconds as the Penguins prevailed 5-3 over the visiting Senators before a raucous crowd of 17,132 at Mellon Arena on Friday night.

Well it looks like Juan Montoya will get a head start on his Nascar career as he was released from his F1 ride. This shouldn’t come to a shock as teams don’t want a lame driver to finish the year out. Montoya will get a head start and may run some Nextel cup events. Montoya I think will do well in his new adventure. he has worked for Chip Ganassi before so that shouldn’t be a problem for him.

He will also bring a big fan base into Nascar which nascar has to be wetting their lips over. Hopefully we will be able to see what he does this year and how well he handles a new form of racing for him.

They’ve endured a goalie controversy, a coaching change and two big injuries at season’s end, but Hockey Night in Canada’s Don Cherry isn’t ready to write off a team as experienced as the Ottawa Senators.

The Senators, who won just 14 of their last 39 playoff games, will take on the No. 2 seed Pittsburgh Penguins Tuesday night in a rematch of a series last year. Few hockey observers are giving Ottawa much chance of pulling the upset, especially after centres Mike Fisher and Daniel Alfredsson suffered serious injuries near the end of the regular season.

When the puck drops in Anaheim shortly after 7 p.m. PT Thursday, the Dallas Stars will unleash 30-goal-scorer Brenden Morrow and 25-goal-men Mike Ribeiro and Niklas Hagman on the defending Stanley Cup champions.

It’s the only way Dallas can beat Anaheim, some hockey observers believe. Forget about getting involved in 1-0 and 2-1 nail-biters.

This time, Miikka Kiprusoff couldn’t rescue the Calgary Flames.

The Finnish netminder was absolutely brilliant in making 41 saves, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the San Jose Sharks from skating to a 2-0 win Thursday on home ice in Game 2 of their Western Conference quarter-final.

Craig Leipold officially took over as owner of the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, completing the purchase of the team from Bob Naegele right in the middle of the first-round playoff series against Colorado.

“It’s been a long process,” Leipold said at a media conference. “Lots of signatures the last couple days. We were hoping to get it done last week and didn’t get done. It just kept dragging out and dragging out.

“I’m just thrilled to death. This is a dream, to be part of a hockey program like this in a market like this. It’s probably going to hit me when I’m on my way back home.”
