Finland and Switzerland turned heads at the women's world hockey championship Tuesday, scoring upset victories to enhance their medal hopes.
Finland pulled out a 1-0 overtime win over the United States in Harbin, China, a game that preceded the Swiss' 4-3 triumph over Sweden, the 2006 Olympic silver medallists.
The closest Finland had previously come to a win against the Americans was a 3-3 tie at the 1997 world championships.

It is interesting to note the furore over the latest Speedo swimsuit, the LZR Racer bodysuit. It has been designed with the help of NASA and, get this, apparently "aids streamlining and reduces skin vibration and muscle oscillation". It has welded, rather than stitched, seams, and is partly made from neoprene, so may increase buoyancy.
Of course people are going to say that it has been responsible for 36 world records so far since its release 2 months ago, but there's another side to this story.

Officials have four times been forced to extinguish the Olympic Torch flame to escape from anti-China protesters.
The finale to the ceremony was subsequently cancelled to avoid further trouble.

The Canadian women's soccer team qualified for the Beijing Olympics on Wednesday night by defeating Mexico 1-0 in the CONCACAF qualifying tournament semifinals in Juarez, Mexico.
Striker Melissa Tancredi scored in her third straight game to help Canada qualify for the Olympics for the first time. Tancredi, a native of Hamilton, scored goals in Canada's round-robin wins over Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica.
"I'm very happy for her and very happy with her performance in this tournament," said Canadian coach Even Pellerud.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Tuesday that the Canadian government has no plans to boycott the entire Beijing Olympic Games, nor does he expect other countries to do so.
"I don't anticipate any kind of a boycott of the Games themselves. … I don't see either in this country or internationally a push for that," he told a news conference.
"I would note that even the Dalai Lama has not called for such a boycott," Harper said.

The head of the International Olympic Committee says he was relieved that the San Francisco leg of the torch relay passed without major incident and is confident the Beijing Games will rebound from the relay "crisis."
The San Francisco relay "fortunately" avoided much of the turmoil and disruptions that marred the trek through London and Paris, said IOC president Jacques Rogge.
"It was, however, not the joyous party that we had wished it to be," said Rogge at the opening of a two-day executive board meeting in Beijing.

When Colorado Avalanche general manager Francois Giguere won a bidding war for Ryan Smyth last July, this is the time of year he was looking to cash in on his investment.
So far, so good, as the intense left-winger converted one of his game-high six shots and added two hits Wednesday to key a 3-2 overtime win against the hometown Minnesota Wild in the opener of their NHL Western Conference quarter-final.

On a day when Chinese divers ruled the pool, Quebec's Meaghan Benfeito and Roseline Filion worked their way to a podium finish on the synchronized platform.
Benfeito and Filion took third place, finishing 34.17 points behind the score of 339.54 posted by China's winning duo of Cao Jingzhen and Chen Ni at a Grand Prix event in Moscow.
Russia's Natalia Goncharova and Yulia Koltunova were second, 18.36 points behind.
Cao also won the women's platform while compatriot Li Shixin dominated the men's springboard.

Chinese Olympic organizers have eliminated wheelchair racing from the Beijing Games, Radio-Canada learned Friday.
As a result, Quebec-born paralympic wheelchair racing champion Chantal Petitclerc will not compete in the Beijing Olympics in August.
