He halted an 0-for-9 skid with the 448-foot jolt.
"Up until tonight, he had not gotten me before," Sonnanstine said. "But he is one of the best hitters in baseball."
It was Rodriguez's third homer this season and the 521st of his major-league career.
A three-time most valuable player in the American League, he has clubbed 176 homers for New York, moving him past Bobby Murcer into 19th place among Yankees.
"It definitely humbles you," Rodriguez said. "I'm at a point in my career where you do some things and you start touching some of these names, and it is hard to believe."
Rodriguez, nicknamed A-Rod, is a career .306 hitter with 1,511 runs batted in, 1,509 runs scored and 265 stolen bases in 1,918 games over 15 MLB seasons with the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers and Yankees.
McCovey, 70, played for the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres and Oakland Athletics from 1959-80.
Williams, one of baseball's most revered hitters, played 19 seasons for the Boston Red Sox between 1939 and 1960.
He died July 5, 2002, at the age of 83.
