Oakland Athletics pitcher Rich Harden was placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, retroactive to April 3.

Harden, from Victoria, missed Tuesday's start because of a strained muscle below his right shoulder blade, and hoped to be ready to return on Saturday.

"He is just not going to be ready," Athletics manager Bob Geren said.

Harden is 1-0 with a 0.82 earned-run average in two starts this season, allowing one run on seven hits and seven walks with 15 strikeouts in 11 innings.

"I got through last game with it and I was wanting to pitch [Tuesday]," Harden said. "But they wanted me to take an extra couple of days."

Chad Gaudin replaced him in Tuesday's 9-8 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays, surrendering six runs — one unearned — on eight hits and a walk in six innings pitched.

Harden is 32-18 lifetime with a 3.54 ERA and two complete games in 86 appearances (78 starts) since making his major-league debut for Oakland on July 21, 2003.
