Bruins’ Bergeron could be lost for season
Posted on Feb 16, 2008 under Disability sport, Golf, Scores & Fixtures, Sport Relief, Table Tennis |The Boston Bruins have crawled back into their first-round Stanley Cup playoff series against Montreal, but it won't accelerate the return of centre Patrice Bergeron.
The NHL team said Monday there isn't a timetable on Bergeron's return from post-concussion syndrome. He may not play again this season.
Bergeron has been held out of the playoffs as a precaution because of the Grade 3 concussion he suffered when driven into the end boards from behind by Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Randy Jones in a game last Oct. 27.
"I'm still waiting for the OK from the doctors," Bergeron said after Monday's practice in Wilmington, Mass. "I went to see them and they wanted me to have some more practices before getting back out there. It's the doctors' decision right now."
Following consecutive overtime games — including Sunday night's 2-1 win by the Bruins, who trail the Canadiens 2-1 in the Eastern Conference quarter-final — Monday's practice was limited to a few Boston players.
Defenceman Andrew Alberts managed a strong hit on Bergeron along the boards.
"That's what I need," Bergeron said. "If I want to get back there, I need hits like that to see how I feel.
"There's no timetable [on a return]," Bergeron said. "Obviously, I'm going to try and get in contact with [the Bruins] again some time but for now, it's disappointing.
"I'd like to be out there and help the guys, but right now I've got to listen to the doctors and do what's best for me."
Prior to his injury, Bergeron scored three goals and seven points in 10 games. He collected 70 points in 77 contests last season.
