Patrick Kane named to U.S. national hockey team

The No. 1 overall draft pick in 2007, Kane, 19, led rookie scoring in 2007-08 with 21 goals and 51 assists. He is considered a top contender for the Calder Memorial Trophy for rookie of the year.

Chicago finished 10th in the Western Conference with 88 points, missing the playoffs.
Kane was selected Wednesday along with 16 other players, most of them NHLers whose teams didn't make the playoffs.
Other NHL rookies joining the U.S. team are forward Peter Mueller of the Phoenix Coyotes (22 goals, 32 assists) and Edmonton Oilers defenceman Tom Gilbert (12 goals, 20 assists).
Nine of the players selected have already competed at the world championships.
The Americans play Sweden on April 27 in an exhibition contest, then kick off the world tournament against Latvia on May 2.
Canada will play exhibition games against Finland on April 26 and Russia on April 28.
This year's world hockey championships, which bring together the world's top 16 hockey countries, are being held in Halifax and Quebec City from May 2 to 18.
