Canada is off to a flying start at the women’s world hockey championship in Harbin, China.

Meghan Agosta scored a pair of goals, and goaltender Kim St. Pierre stopped 10 of 11 shots to pace Canada to an easy 8-1 win over Russia on Friday in the tournament’s opening Group A game.

Cherie Piper, Becky Kellar, Gina Kingsbury, Jennifer Botterill, Caroline Ouellette and Hayley Wickenheiser also scored for Canada.

Canada’s next game is against China on Sunday.

Also on Friday, the United States defeated Germany 8-1 in Group B action, and Sweden blanked Japan 5-0 in Group C.

The first-place teams in the three first-round groups advance to the playoff round, where they play each other in a round robin. The second-place teams from the opening round square off in the runners-up pool, and the third-place teams play in the relegation round.

The top two teams in the playoff round advance to the gold medal game, while the third-place team meets the winner of the runners-up pool for the bronze.

Canada won gold at last year’s tournament in Winnipeg.
