Canada lost 6-5 on penalty kicks to the U.S. in last Saturday's final of the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
After battling to a 0-0 draw through regulation, Carli Lloyd opened the scoring for the U.S. on a free kick in the 110th minute, but Melissa Tancredi tied it on a header in the 118th minute to force penalty kicks.
"It was one of our best games that we have ever played against the United States," Canadian coach Even Pellerud said. "This was an international match of a very, very high standard."
Lloyd, Leslie Osborne, Abby Wambach, Angela Hucles, Christie Rampone and Heather O'Reilly scored from the spot for the Americans.
Kara Lang, Rhian Wilkinson, Christine Sinclair, Tancredi and Clare Rustad replied for the Canadians.
After O'Reilly put the U.S. ahead, American goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart made a diving save on Brittany Timko's penalty kick to clinch the win.
The U.S. is 34-3-4 versus Canada, dating back to 1986.
The Olympic women's soccer competition will be held in five Chinese cities from Aug. 6-21.
